Biography
Charles Wesley Godwin has woven his West Virginia roots deeply into his songwriting, crafting narratives around pivotal moments in everyday existence that feel immediate and authentic. His approach blends classic country traditions with folk-inflected textures, and his supple baritone carries a natural tremor that lends performances an unmistakable sincerity. After years of club performances and songwriting refinement, he issued his first album, Seneca, in 2019, a collection of Appalachian reflections composed during his time in the Midwest; subsequent releases How the Mighty Fall in 2021 and Family Ties in 2023 demonstrated the same assured storytelling across an expanding thematic scope.
Born and raised in West Virginia, Godwin grew up with a coal-mining father and a mother who worked as a teacher. Outdoor pursuits such as hunting and fishing, along with athletics—particularly football—dominated his early years, though music always held a quiet pull. He entered West Virginia University with football ambitions, yet after being released from the squad he sought a fresh outlet and acquired a guitar in 2012. Within months he began composing, drawing influence from Ryan Bingham, Chris Knight, Willie Nelson, and John Prine. A semester abroad in Estonia in 2013 led to informal performances for new acquaintances, including a debut appearance arranged at a fashion show. After graduating from WVU in 2014, he committed fully to music the following year. He co-founded the Americana group Union Sound Treaty, which gained regional traction in West Virginia before differing schedules prompted its dissolution.
Relocating to Ohio after his wife secured employment there, Godwin channeled his separation from home into songs about Appalachian life that became the core of Seneca. The 2019 album garnered strong critical notice, while the track “Hardwood Floors” found notable streaming traction. Touring in support placed him alongside Luke Combs, Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, and Shooter Jennings until the COVID-19 pandemic halted live music in early 2020. Around the same period he and his wife welcomed their first child, an experience that shaped the material for his next project. Working again with producer and engineer Al Torrence, Godwin assembled the songs that formed How the Mighty Fall, issued in November 2021. He joined Zach Bryan for the track “Jamie” on the 2022 EP Summertime Blues, then issued the singles “All Again” and “Family Ties” ahead of the album Family Ties later in 2023.
