Biography
After claiming a Hoku Award in 1997—the Hawaiian counterpart to the Grammy—Darlene Ahuna established herself among the foremost vocal presences in Hawaiian music. Without any structured instruction, she cultivated a soothing delivery after an early childhood encounter with her uncle’s performances. The ukulele soon entered her orbit, mastered through solitary effort. Relocating to a different school at fourteen placed her in an atmosphere rich with creative outlets, prompting her swift adoption of rhythm guitar. At seventeen she began appearing alongside Ku’uipo Kumukahi, delivering traditional Hawaiian repertoire. In 1995 a disc jockey attending one of her hula recitals recognized the voice and directed her toward Hula Records, which signed her for a solo trajectory. Three albums have followed under that agreement, with her husband J.J. serving as professional assistant throughout.
