Biography
Dave Gahan fronted the synth pop innovators Depeche Mode, delivering their alternative anthems to worldwide audiences spanning multiple generations of listeners. Although the genre carried no built-in soulful intent, his resonant baritone, commanding stage presence, and magnetic persona infused the band’s output with emotional intensity and openness, driving platinum certifications, global chart peaks, and eventual entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Apart from Depeche Mode commitments, Gahan pursued a parallel solo path that began with the 2003 release of Paper Monsters and continued with Hourglass in 2007; he also completed three albums alongside U.K. producers Soulsavers.
Gahan entered Depeche Mode in 1980 as the charismatic, stylish vocalist the lineup required. At first he delivered an icy yet buoyant vocal style that highlighted the melodic hooks of early singles such as “Just Can’t Get Enough” and “Dreaming of Me” with youthful energy. When Martin L. Gore’s material grew darker on the 1986 album Black Celebration, Gahan responded with a correspondingly somber delivery that matched the lyrical mood and positioned him as a formative influence on subsequent industrial, gothic rock, and synth pop artists.
By the time of 1993’s Songs of Faith and Devotion, Gahan had settled in Los Angeles and, influenced by the visual and sonic traits of grunge acts, lengthened his hair while cultivating a beard. The abrupt image change unsettled longtime Depeche Mode followers, who feared the group was veering toward mainstream rock. Concurrently Gahan succumbed to heroin, the drug then favored by numerous rock musicians. After an unsuccessful suicide attempt in the mid-1990s, he addressed his dependency at a rehabilitation clinic. A revitalized Gahan returned for Depeche Mode’s Ultra in 1997 and Exciter in 2001.
In 2003, twenty-two years into Depeche Mode’s existence, Gahan launched his first solo career. He made his initial appearance as a credited songwriter with the June arrival of Paper Monsters and toured North America and Europe from July onward to promote the sultry rock album. Following completion of the industrial-tinged Playing the Angel with Depeche Mode in 2005, he issued his second solo effort, the throbbing Hourglass, in 2007. Between that record and the next two Depeche Mode albums—2009’s Sounds of the Universe and 2013’s Delta Machine, both containing further songwriting contributions from Gahan—he recorded his debut Soulsavers collaboration The Light the Dead See, supplying every lyric and lead vocal. His second Soulsavers project, the blues- and gospel-inspired Angels & Ghosts, appeared in late 2015.
