Biography
Known as “the Charley Russell of Western Music,” cowboy singer Dave Stamey fully merits the comparison. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the skilled period painter Charles M. Russell completed more than 2,000 canvases portraying cowboys, Indians, and the American West’s terrain, each rendered with precise detail and emotional depth. Stamey mirrors that achievement through song. His work evokes the modern cowboy’s existence during ongoing upheaval, an era in which elements shift without pause while others stay fixed. Rather than simply echoing the genre, Stamey brings firsthand perspective from his years as a working cowboy, rancher, mule packer, and dude wrangler, giving him clear insight into both the setting and his listeners along with a gift for performance and a sharp head for business. His recordings convey genuine character through polished production and performance, preserving cultural and historical accuracy without unnecessary ornament. Independently released titles among his catalog comprise Buckaroo Man (1997), Tonopah (1999), Campfire Waltz (2000), Wheels (2001), If I Had a Horse (2003), the live It’s Just a State of Mind (2007), Old Friends (2007), and Come Ride with Me (2009).
