Biography
In the early 1940s, Allyn served as vocalist for performances and recordings with Jack Teagarden's big band. Mid-decade work placed him in Boyd Raeburn's orchestra while he simultaneously led combo dates that featured Lucky Thompson. Later associations brought collaborations with Paul Smith, Johnny Mandel, Stan Kenton, and Count Basie. Club work filled the 1960s, yet his musical activities receded behind efforts to assist drug addicts until the mid-1970s, when a duo album with pianist Barry Harris marked his return. Further recordings appeared in Los Angeles through the mid-1970s and early 1980s.
