Biography
After participating in Black Flag’s initial lineup between 1981 and 1982, Dez Cadena departed when the group paused operations temporarily in 1983 amid disputes over contracts involving Unicorn/MCA. In 1984 he assembled DC3 by enlisting Paul Roessler and Jeff Dahl, both experienced in the L.A. hardcore community, resulting in a group that revisited hardcore origins through reinterpretations of Black Sabbath’s heavy sludge approach while minimizing punk elements. The outfit secured a deal with SST Records, the label run by ex-Black Flag associate Greg Ginn that also managed the original band, and issued its first recording This Is the Dream during 1985. DC3 followed with You’re Only as Blind as Your Mind Can Be and Good Hex in 1986, where references to Sabbath appeared less prominently. The next year saw Roessler issuing a self-titled LP under the Twisted Roots name that included contributions from Cadena and Dahl yet operated primarily as his individual project. What counted as Roessler’s initial solo release under his own designation arrived in 1988 titled Abominable. Also in 1988 came The Crimony EP, representing Roessler’s third release as a solo artist though under another name, aided in production by Mike Watt who was his brother-in-law. SST put out Vida in 1989 as a DC3 collection drawing from live performances in Los Angeles over the prior couple of years.
