Deee-Lite propelled the vivid energy of New York nightlife into widespread attention through the enormous success of their single “Groove Is in the Heart.” The group came together in 1986 as a trio fronted by vocalist Lady Miss Kier, born Kieren Kirby in Youngstown, Ohio, and completed by Super DJ Dmitry, a classically trained guitarist and Russian emigre born Dmitry Brill, along with Jungle DJ Towa Towa, born Doug Wa-Chung in Tokyo, Japan.

They blended house, techno, rap, ambient, and funk while adopting an extravagant visual style drawn largely from the drag queen scene; Kier’s preference for Fluevog platform shoes further fueled the resurgence of 1970s fashion. The band quickly won over New York’s club regulars, and the members’ distinct cultural backgrounds attracted listeners across racial and sexual lines. Their first album, World Clique, arrived in 1990 and crossed over successfully on the strength of tracks such as the loping “Groove Is in the Heart,” which featured fluid bass from Bootsy Collins and saxophone from Maceo Parker, and “Power of Love.”

The 1992 follow-up, Infinity Within, shifted toward explicit political themes, addressing the environment, safe sex, and democracy. Towa Towa departed shortly afterward, adopted the name Towa Tei, and issued his solo debut Future Listening in 1995. Kier and Dmitry recruited DJ Ani for the 1994 release Dewdrops in the Garden, a sensual record shaped by the rising rave movement. After the 1996 remix collection Sampladelic Relics and Dancefloor Oddities, Deee-Lite dissolved. The former members continued working separately as DJs; Dmitry moved to Berlin and also took on production work, while Tei maintained his solo output and joined the supergroup Metafive alongside Cornelius’ Keigo Oyamada and musicians from Yellow Magic Orchestra and Denki Groove. In 2017 Cherry Red reissued World Clique as a deluxe edition containing numerous remixes and an interview with Kier.
