Biography
Delicate Steve emerged as the vehicle for New Jersey guitarist and songwriter Steve Marion, whose instrumental compositions weave together the exploratory spirit of 1970s prog rock, the African-tinged pop of Dirty Projectors and Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective’s layered sonic experiments, and the buoyant melodies of video-game soundtracks. His pieces typically interlace percussion, keyboards, and electronic treatments around fluid slide-guitar lines. From the outset Marion fused avant-garde leanings with tuneful songcraft on his 2011 debut Wondervisions, later extending that approach through the brightly playful This Is Steve in 2017 and the more relaxed, nocturnal After Hours in 2022. The 2024 release Delicate Steve Sings, despite its title, presented a gentle blend of covers and originals fronted entirely by Marion’s expressive guitar. In parallel he established himself as a sought-after session player, contributing to recordings by Paul Simon, Yeasayer, and Sondre Lerche, and served as touring guitarist for the Black Keys.
After years of engineering sessions for acquaintances, Marion recognized that his home studio contained sufficient equipment to document his own material and proceeded to do so. Under the Delicate Steve alias he issued Wondervisions in 2011 on David Byrne’s Luaka Bop imprint, then followed with the sophomore album Positive Force in 2012 on the same label. The subsequent year he collaborated with guitarist Christian Peslak on the Saint Rich project Beyond the Drone. As awareness of his playing grew, peers began enlisting him for their records, among them Yeasayer, Sondre Lerche, and People Get Ready. While supporting Tame Impala on the road in late 2014 he captured the live set Live in Las Vegas, released the following year. Throughout 2016 he added guitar to albums by Lewis Del Mar and Your Friend, returned to Yeasayer’s sessions, and supplied slide parts for Paul Simon’s Stranger to Stranger. Early in 2017 he unveiled the hook-laden This Is Steve on Epitaph’s Anti- label, his first release for the imprint; Anti- also put out the Cowboy Stories EP later that year. Marion contributed multiple guitar textures to Amen Dunes’ 2018 album Freedom and, that October, delivered The Christmas Album. Still with Anti-, he released his fifth studio album Till I Burn Up in March 2019 and joined the Black Keys’ Let’s Rock touring lineup as guitarist.
His next full-length, After Hours, arrived in July 2022 and showcased relaxed compositions written and tracked on a 1966 Fender Stratocaster; its tracklist included titles such as “Street Breeze” and “Still Life,” with occasional assistance from bassist Shahzad Ismaily and percussionist Mauro Refosco. August 2024 brought the seventh Delicate Steve album, Delicate Steve Sings, on which Marion’s guitar alone carried a subdued sequence of originals alongside interpretations of the Beatles’ “Yesterday” and Otis Redding’s “These Arms of Mine.”
