Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau

Albert Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau entered the world on May 28, 1925, and would later establish himself as both a singer and conductor whose interpretations earned widespread admiration and respect among his peers. He left a lasting imprint on the Germanic Lieder tradition. During World War II his initial chance to perform for compatriots arose after Allied forces took him prisoner; while held in an Italian POW camp he delivered lieder to other Germans. Once the conflict ended he launched his professional path through a sequence of well-received recitals in 1947. Those appearances soon secured him a baritone post at the Berlin State Opera, extending his reach to broader listeners. Following numerous successful engagements across Europe he made his American debut in 1955, performing in Cincinnati. Before those international journeys he had already signaled the decade’s personal milestones by committing his first collection of lieder to disc in 1951. The many subsequent releases that showcased his lieder interpretations would require excessive space to catalog, yet the caliber of his work remained consistently high. Seven years after retiring he received further recognition when British Classic Magazine placed him among the Top Singers of the Century in 1999, ranking him directly behind Jussi Bjorling.
