Dita Von Teese has built a multifaceted career that encompasses burlesque performance, modeling, design, and authorship, yet she has periodically ventured into music as well. Video appearances mark some of those musical intersections, with credits alongside Green Day, Marilyn Manson, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Monarchy, and Die Antwoord. She supplied guest vocals on two of those collaborations, contributing her whispery delivery to Die Antwoord’s “Gucci Coochie” as well as Monarchy’s “Disintegration” and their cover of Blur’s “Girls Against Boys.” In 2016 Von Teese assembled the compilation Soundtrack for Seduction, a collection of sensual recordings that featured her own interpretation of “A Guy What Takes His Time” plus three additional tracks she performed. Her most substantial musical project originated after Sébastien Tellier observed her dancing to one of his compositions at the Crazy Horse cabaret in Paris; moved by her ethereal beauty, he composed a set of delicate electropop pieces expressly for her voice. The resulting sessions took place across Sydney, Los Angeles, and Paris and enlisted keyboardist John Kirby together with drummer Daniel Stricker, both of whom joined Tellier in producing the material under the Mind Gamers moniker. Dita Von Teese was released in February 2018.
