Don Toliver built a reputation through his singular fusion of singing and trap production. Recognition arrived on an international scale for the Houston native in 2018 via his contribution to "Can't Say," a Top 40 U.S. pop single taken from Travis Scott's Astroworld LP. After inking a deal with Scott's Cactus Jack imprint, Toliver appeared alongside Scott and Sheck Wes on the 2019 compilation JackBoys, which topped the chart, then entered the Top Ten independently with the 2020 release Heaven or Hell. Both his second and third albums, Life of a DON (2021) and the lavish, celebrity-filled Love Sick (2023), also reached the Top Ten. Hardstone Psycho, issued as his fourth album in June 2024, entered the Billboard rankings at number three.

Caleb Zackery Toliver launched his recording career in May 2017 by issuing the joint mixtape Playa Familia alongside fellow rapper and friend Yungjosh93. Drawing from sung-rap peers such as Trippie Redd and Future, the project merged Toliver's 03 Greedo-inflected delivery with Yungjosh's Jeremih-styled vocals, lending an offbeat flavor to their shared influences. Toliver's first solo material surfaced only months afterward when the singles "I Gotta" and "Diva" appeared in November and December. Demonstrating facility with both modern trap and R&B, the tracks drew notice from Atlantic Records, which added Toliver to its roster in March 2018. While at the label he issued three additional singles—"Make Sumn," "Checks," and "Holdin' Steel"—ahead of the sophomore mixtape and major-label debut Donny Womack.

During work on that project, fellow Houston native Travis Scott took notice and brought Toliver to Hawaii for sessions on Astroworld. Toliver accepted the invitation and secured a feature on the track "Can't Say," an experience that also shaped much of the material later included on Donny Womack.

Although Donny Womack generated local attention and online interest upon its August arrival, "Can't Say" proved the decisive factor in elevating Toliver's profile. The song quickly amassed millions of daily streams for Scott; even without listed credits, listeners sought details on the rapper delivering the memorable second verse. Days after Astroworld's release, Scott confirmed he had signed Toliver to the newly formed Cactus Jack Records and continued to champion the artist's work during post-Astroworld radio appearances and at the album's namesake festival.

Propelled by Scott's support, Toliver paused for touring and festival dates before issuing new solo material in mid-2019. From May through July he dropped the singles "Back Up," "Best You Had," and "No Idea" in advance of Cactus Jack's JackBoys compilation. Heaven or Hell, his second full-length project, followed in March of the next year. Featuring complete versions of previously teased tracks "Cardigan" and "After Party" along with 2019's "No Idea," the set reached number seven on the Billboard 200 and extended the Auto-tuned vocal approach of his debut. Toliver returned in 2021 with the single "What You Need" and then released Life of a DON that October, a number-two-charting effort that included guest spots from Scott, Kali Uchis, Baby Keem, and SoFaygo.

The rapper sustained momentum in 2022 by unveiling "Do It Right" as the opening preview of his third album. Love Sick, whose contributors encompassed Uchis, GloRilla, Lil Durk, Justin Bieber, and Future—the latter two appearing on the ninth Hot 100 entry "Private Landing"—arrived the following February and debuted at number eight. "Bandit," released in 2024, peaked at number 14 on the Hot Rap Songs chart and served as the lead track for Hardstone Psycho, Toliver's fourth album, which surfaced in June 2024 and featured Cash Cobain, Lil Uzi Vert, Travis Scott, and additional guests.
