Biography
Dorothy Donegan stood out as a dazzling virtuoso whose improvisations fluidly merged boogie-woogie, bop, stride, Art Tatum-style swing, and classical music, often within a single chorus. Onstage she routinely constructed spontaneous medleys from unrelated tunes and danced freely at the keyboard without hesitation. After training at the Chicago Conservatory and Chicago Music College, she released her first recordings in 1942. Her striking appearance in the 1945 film Sensations of 1945 failed to translate into widespread fame, even though her technical command remained exceptional. Between 1954 and 1963 she issued only six little-known albums, followed by a decade-long silence from 1964 to 1974, and broader recognition within jazz circles arrived only in the mid-1980s. Two live Chiaroscuro albums cut in 1990–1991 captured her at full strength, yet her artistry truly registered only in live performance. She succumbed to cancer on May 19, 1998.
