Doug Benson, a comedian, actor, and filmmaker honored by High Times magazine as its Stoner of the Year in 2006, built a reputation around cannabis-themed material yet still secured spots on VH1's Best Week Ever, NBC's Last Comic Standing, and additional programs less inclined toward such subject matter. After abandoning college, he relocated from San Diego to Los Angeles intent on pursuing acting; however, a friend's challenge to perform at an open-mike night inside a comedy club ignited an enduring passion for stand-up. Extensive road work eventually brought him to 2004 and the off-Broadway project he co-created, The Marijuana-Logues, whose original cast recording appeared on the Comedy Central label. During summer 2007 he finished sixth among finalists on the reality series Last Comic Standing, then placed a track on the September compilation Comedy Death-Ray. By year's end his documentary Super High Me, a parody of Morgan Spurlock's Super Size Me, debuted at the Woodstock Film Festival. Both the film and Benson's debut album Professional Humoredian reached stores in 2008. One year afterward he issued Unbalanced Load, his initial complete album for the Comedy Central imprint. Hypocritical Oaf arrived in 2010, followed by Potty Mouth the next year. His 2012 release Smug Life comprised a multi-disc package whose two discs presented essentially identical material, one recorded sober and the other under the influence.
