Biography
Initially functioning as Gary Numan's live ensemble, the British synth pop collective Dramatis later ventured out independently. After issuing several singles and unveiling their 1981 debut album For Future Reference, the outfit dissolved. A 2019 reactivation brought the single "The Torment of Angels" into circulation.
Numan's withdrawal from concert appearances in 1981 left his support musicians—vocalist/keyboardist Chris Payne, guitarist Russell Bell, drummer Cedric Sharpley, keyboardist Dennis Haines, and bassist Paul Gardiner—without direction. While Gardiner pursued solo endeavors, the others coalesced as Dramatis. Their approach yielded a gloomier iteration of Numan's synth pop style, beginning with the May 1981 single "Ex Luna Scientia." Subsequent releases "Oh! 2025" and "No One Lives Forever" preceded the album For Future Reference. The follow-up single "Love Needs No Disguise," featuring Numan on vocals, reached the U.K. Top 40, marking their sole chart entry. Three additional non-album singles appeared in 1982 as Haines departed to join the Hollies. Reduced to a trio, the remaining members ended Dramatis that year upon resuming duties in Numan's live and studio lineup.
Persistent speculation about a reunion persisted across decades until Sharpley's death in 2012, just as prospects seemed strongest. With Bell and Payne developing separate projects, they surprised observers by confirming Dramatis' return and launching the single "The Torment of Angels," while a second album took shape. Cherry Red issued a 2022 deluxe reissue of For Future Reference that gathered B-sides, extended mixes, and a BBC-recorded 1982 concert from London's Paris Theatre.
