Biography
Dub Narcotic Sound System emerged as an offbeat indie-funk collective led by vocalist Calvin Johnson, previously the frontman of Beat Happening and the founder of K Records. The group took its name from Johnson's basement studio called Dub Narcotic in Olympia, Washington, and launched in 1994 through a quick succession of singles shaped by funk, rap, and reggae, among them "Bite," "Fuck Shit Up," "Booty Run," and "Shake-a-Puddin'." Johnson remained the only unchanging participant throughout, while later releases such as the EPs Industrial Breakdown, Ridin' Shotgun, and Ship to Shore brought in a rotating cast that featured Olympia figures including Lois Maffeo alongside Larry Butler, Todd Ranslow, and Brian Weber, all drawn from the hip-hop group Dead Presidents. The project's debut album, Rhythm Record, Vol. One: Echoes From the Scene Control Room, surfaced in 1995, with Boot Party arriving the next year and Out of Your Mind following in 1998. A joint effort with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, titled Sideways Soul, appeared in 1999.
