Emerging from Montreal in 2003, Duchess Says traces its origins to the enigmatic “Church of Budgerigars,” with keyboardist/guitarist Ismael Tremblay, bassist Philippe Clément, vocalist/guitarist Annie-Claude Deschênes, and percussionist Simon “Simon Says” Besre asserting that their shared affiliation with the obscure congregation prompted them to propagate its teachings via sound. The quartet also brands its style “Moog rock,” fusing synthesizers with propulsive punk grooves. Its debut full-length, Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs, surfaced in 2008, the same year the band backed the Yeah Yeah Yeahs across a U.K. tour. Duchess Says earned a reputation for visceral performances, driven largely by Deschênes’s confrontational stage presence as the group’s magnetic frontwoman. In 2009 the outfit issued an EP alongside a split 7" single shared with Red Mass, then delivered its sophomore album, In a Fung Day T!, during the autumn of 2011.
