Duffy rose to prominence amid a wave of nostalgic British vocalists who had propelled Amy Winehouse into the spotlight, setting herself apart through a melodic, old-school timbre reminiscent of 1960s figures such as Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark. Amy Ann Duffy entered the world in the modest seaside settlement of Nefyn on Wales’s Llyn Peninsula in Gwynedd and began vocalizing while still quite young. Her listening options, however, remained confined to the vintage long-players owned by her parents, leaving her with scant reference points.

Consequently, her father’s collection of VHS recordings from the 1960s British television program Ready Steady Go! supplied one of her primary wellsprings of inspiration; throughout her adolescent years she sang with an assortment of groups, cultivating an appealingly retro style that drew the attention of Rough Trade Records founder Jeannette Lee in 2004. Lee fostered the young performer’s development by introducing her to former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler. Together the pair composed multiple tracks, among them the single “Rockferry,” which showcased Duffy’s affinity for the soulful idiom shaped by Stax and Motown.

“Rockferry” served as the title cut for her first full-length release, issued by Polydor in 2008, yet it was another number—“Mercy”—that transformed her into a global sensation. The song ascended to the top of the British singles chart, marking the first occasion in twenty-five years that a Welsh female artist had achieved that position, while the subsequent single “Warwick Avenue” reached number three. Beyond the United Kingdom, “Mercy” attained platinum certification in the United States. Rockferry ranked among the year’s most successful albums, moving more than two million units domestically, securing a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, and earning multi-platinum status across numerous additional territories.

Duffy initiated work on her sophomore effort in 2009, pausing briefly to make her screen debut in the 2010 drama Patagonia. Recording for the project occurred in both England and New York, where Albert Hammond functioned simultaneously as producer and co-writer. The finished album, Endlessly, appeared in November 2010.
