Leona Lewis rose to global prominence after securing victory in the 2006 season of the British talent series The X Factor, her commanding vocal delivery frequently drawing parallels to Mariah Carey. The primary driver behind her breakthrough proved to be the worldwide phenomenon "Bleeding Love," a resilient soul power ballad that ascended to the summit of the charts across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and numerous European territories. That momentum transformed Lewis into a household name during 2007, while her inaugural full-length project Spirit cemented the achievement by moving in excess of seven million units internationally. Although subsequent releases never matched those heights, her profile remained prominent through the arrival of Echo in 2009 and Glassheart in 2012, after which she moved to a new imprint for the 2015 album I Am.

Born and raised in the Islington district of North London, Lewis attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School at her parents' encouragement, the first in a series of performance-focused academies. She ultimately graduated from the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology at age 17, determined to launch a professional music career. By then she had already composed several original compositions and was actively seeking opportunities. Alongside her own songwriting efforts, she secured the lead role in a Disneyland Paris staging of The Lion King, only for an ice-skating accident to derail those plans. Once recovered, she issued the independent album Twilight on Spiral Music, which attracted limited notice even after receiving airplay on BBC Radio 1 in 2004. A subsequent deal with UEG Entertainment yielded the unreleased project Best Kept Secret.

After repeated setbacks, Lewis entered the 2006 edition of The X Factor. By its third season the program had become a major fixture, and judge Simon Cowell's decision to mentor her provided significant exposure. She ultimately claimed the title and issued the coronation single "A Moment Like This" in 2006—the same track Kelly Clarkson had performed upon winning the Cowell-produced American Idol in 2002. The release quickly reached number one in the United Kingdom and ranked as the year's second-highest-selling single despite its December 17 street date.

Following the victory, Lewis signed with J Records and began recording her debut album. Spirit arrived in November 2007, its lead track "Bleeding Love"—penned by Ryan Tedder and Jesse McCartney and helmed by Tedder—quickly becoming a global phenomenon that topped charts on multiple continents. The project yielded additional successes throughout 2007 and 2008: "Better in Time" reached the Top 10 in nearly every territory except the United States, while "Footprints in the Sand," "Forgive Me," and "Run" all landed inside the U.K. Top 10, the last of these hitting number one in 2008.

Those accomplishments generated substantial anticipation for the follow-up Echo, released in November 2009 around the same period Lewis unveiled "I See You (Theme from Avatar)." Boasting input from Tedder, Shellback, Max Martin, and Justin Timberlake, the album spawned the hit "Happy" yet fell short of Spirit's multi-platinum performance; it earned Silver certification from the BPI and Gold from the RIAA, in contrast to the earlier set's double-platinum and quadruple-platinum accolades. In 2011 Lewis teamed with Avicii for the single "Trouble," which climbed to number four in the United Kingdom without registering on American charts.

She returned with Glassheart in 2012, an album that bypassed a United States release yet still reached number three in the United Kingdom, aided by the duet "Trouble" with Childish Gambino that peaked at number seven. One last Sony outing, the holiday collection Christmas, With Love, surfaced in 2013 before Lewis joined Universal/Def Jam. Her debut for the label, I Am, received a worldwide rollout in September 2015. It entered the U.K. chart at number twelve and failed to produce major singles; its opening track "Fire Under My Feet" peaked at number 51. During summer 2016 Lewis portrayed Grizabella in a Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats, at which point she disclosed her departure from Island and issued the charity single "(We All Are) Looking for Home."
