Biography
A talented singer blending pop and R&B styles, Jordin Sparks first gained widespread attention by claiming victory on the sixth season of American Idol. Only 17 years old at the time of her 2007 triumph, she capitalized on the win without delay, landing her self-titled debut album inside the Billboard 200’s upper tier while delivering Hot 100 singles such as “Tattoo” and the Grammy-nominated “No Air.” The 2009 follow-up Battlefield climbed to number seven on the Billboard 200, propelled by its chart-topping title track, and further expanded her profile through television appearances, Broadway runs in In the Heights and Waitress, and a stint on Dancing with the Stars. Her honors include an NAACP Image Award, a BET Award, an American Music Award, and a People’s Choice Award. In 2015 she issued Right Here Right Now, which reached number 11 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart; the EP Sounds Like Me surfaced in 2020, and the holiday project Cider & Hennessy arrived soon after. By October 2023 she had unveiled “Call My Name” as the opening preview of her fifth studio album.
Born in 1989 and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Sparks is the daughter of Phillippi Sparks, who played left cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys and defensive back for the New York Giants. Her vocal ability surfaced almost as soon as she could talk, and by her early teens she was already performing, acting in stage productions, modeling, and collecting recognition for her skills. Early highlights include joint appearances with Alice Cooper and Michael W. Smith, selection as Coca-Cola’s Rising Star in 2002, and the 2003 release of the For Now EP alongside CCM artist Matthew Ward and engineer Gary Leach. In 2004 she earned two trophies at the Gospel Music Association Academy, finished second at Music in the Rockies, and made two appearances on America’s Most Talented Kids. The year 2006 brought victory in a plus-size modeling contest sponsored by Torrid and an accompanying ad in the December issue of Seventeen.
Also in 2006, Sparks tried out for American Idol at the Los Angeles callbacks but was initially passed over; she later secured the Arizona Idol title, earning a second chance in Seattle. Her rendition of Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me” advanced her to Hollywood, and she soon joined the final 12 contestants in early 2007. Standout performances of “I (Who Have Nothing)” and “Hey Baby” highlighted her range and stage presence, quickly turning her into a viewer favorite. Like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Hicks before her, she avoided the bottom two or three throughout the season and ultimately prevailed over Blake Lewis and Melinda Doolittle on 23 May 2007. Her coronation single “This Is My Now” followed immediately after the finale, and she spent the summer on the American Idol tour.
While preparing her first album she resumed work with Leach, sharing early tracks on her website. The single “Tattoo” introduced the self-titled Jordin Sparks, which reached stores during the 2007 holiday season. The 2008 duet “No Air” with Chris Brown climbed to number three on the Hot 100. Her second album, Battlefield, arrived in summer 2009, peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200 behind its title track, and supported her inaugural headlining U.S. tour.
For the next five years Sparks focused on television roles, soundtrack contributions, and compilation features before resuming her solo catalog with Right Here Right Now in 2015, released through a joint venture with Louder Than Life/RAL. Led by “Double Tap,” the project appeared on the Billboard 200 and reached number 11 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. In 2018 she explored her passion for baking with the web series Heart of Batter with Jordin Sparks. After parting from Louder Than Life/RAL she teamed with Elijah Blake for the 1990 Forever EP, joined the Broadway cast of Waitress in the role of Jenna Hunterson for a limited engagement, and released the Sounds Like Me EP in August 2020 featuring the singles “Unknown” and “Red Sangria.” That November she delivered her first holiday collection, Cider & Hennessy. The following year she participated in both The Masked Singer and Dancing with the Stars, and in October 2023 she offered “Call My Name” as the lead single from her forthcoming fifth studio album.
