Biography
Duke Pearson earned recognition as a skilled, melodic, and methodical pianist whose measured approach contributed substantially to the hard bop aesthetic that defined Blue Note Records throughout the 1960s, where he worked extensively as a producer. His lasting reputation rests chiefly on several engaging and memorable compositions, above all the atmospheric “Cristo Redentor” written for Donald Byrd, “Sweet Honey Bee” recorded under his own name and by Lee Morgan, and “Jeannine,” which evolved into a widely interpreted jazz standard. Introduced to brass instruments and the piano during his early years, Pearson impressed his uncle—an admirer of Duke Ellington—with his keyboard facility, prompting the relative to bestow the nickname that stayed with him. Severe dental issues compelled him to set brass playing aside, after which he performed as a pianist throughout Atlanta and other parts of Georgia and Florida until relocating to New York in 1959. Once there, he became a member of Donald Byrd’s group and the Art Farmer-Benny Golson Sextet while also serving as accompanist for Nancy Wilson. In 1963 he supplied arrangements for four selections scored for jazz septet and eight-voice choir on Byrd’s forward-looking album A New Perspective, among them “Cristo Redentor,” which emerged as a jazz hit. Between 1963 and 1970 Pearson oversaw numerous Blue Note sessions and simultaneously documented the bulk of his own leader dates. He further directed a big band from 1967 to 1970 and once more in 1972, engaging such musicians as Pepper Adams, Chick Corea, Lew Tabackin, Randy Brecker, and Garnett Brown. Throughout the 1970s he maintained vocal accompaniments, including work with Carmen McRae, yet devoted much of the second half of the decade to contending with the progressive effects of multiple sclerosis.
