Jazz/R&B guitarist Dwight Sills launched his career in Houston during the 1980s as a member of the jazz ensemble Axis. Kirk Whalum secured him a deal with Columbia Records, which issued the debut album Dwight Sills in 1990 and saw it register on the R&B charts. The 1992 follow-up Second Wind proved less commercially viable, after which Sills shifted into sideman work, recording and touring with Whalum, Anita Baker, Boney James, Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, Wayne Henderson & the Next Crusade, and Brenda Russell. He also appeared on numerous sessions produced by Babyface. A new publishing contract followed in 1997, and Citylights Music brought out his third solo album, Easy, in 1999.
