Biography
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dylan Dunlap fuses pop, folk, and electronica into a lush, optimistic sound shaped by the work of Coldplay and Mumford & Sons. Equally skilled as a vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, he first reached wide audiences through the streaming successes “If That’s Alright” in 2019 and “Who Would Have Thought” in 2020, while simultaneously turning his platform toward mental-health awareness. After joining the Nettwerk roster he issued a rapid series of EPs—Soldier On in 2021, Stranger in My Head in 2022, and In Case We Don’t Come Back in 2023—before unveiling his own East Magnolia Records imprint with the 2024 full-length Angeleno, a ten-track narrative that traces a cross-country journey from Los Angeles to New York City.
Encouraged by his father, a working musician, Dunlap began piano lessons at six and later mastered guitar on his own. Home recording experiments started by age eleven; although film scoring initially captivated him, he ultimately chose the path of a singer-songwriter. Street performances across Los Angeles sharpened his craft before he enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2015 he earned a spot on NBC’s The Voice, and the national exposure from the program and its subsequent tours paved the way for his debut album, 2016’s Thoughts Become Things, followed by the 2017 EP Feels Right at Home. The 2018 single “Microphones & Lights” marked a breakthrough, and while touring the United States he supported OneRepublic at the sold-out Stadium of Fire in Provo, Utah.
A committed advocate, Dunlap directed every dollar from his early EPs’ digital sales to Phoenix’s PSA Behavioral Health Agency and frequently addresses his personal challenges in his lyrics. That commitment earned him the Fighting Stigma Rising Star Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Momentum continued online with the 2019 EP Things I Can’t Explain and the millions of streams that followed “If That’s Alright.” Another streaming favorite, “Who Would Have Thought,” arrived in 2020, leading to his Nettwerk signing and the 2021 release of Soldier On. After scattered singles he returned with Stranger in My Head in early 2022 and Common Denominator ten months later.
Once he founded East Magnolia Records, Dunlap sustained the pace in 2023 with When You’re Feeling Blue and In Case We Don’t Come Back. August 2024 brought Angeleno, his first full-length project since 2016, again chronicling a coming-of-age arc that begins on the West Coast and concludes in New York City.
