Trained under Roslyn Brogue Henning as well as the Schillinger Method, this pianist created innovative graphic notational methods shaped by both Schillinger and Calder. Between 1952 and 1955 he joined John Cage on the Project for Music for Magnetic Tape. Further pieces encompass Music for "Tender Buttons" scored for speaker, flute, horn, and harp in 1953, Indices for chamber orchestra in 1954, Calder Piece for four percussionists and mobile in 1967, Modules I-II for orchestra in 1966, Event: Synergy II for 11 woodwinds and eight strings in 1968, Time Spans for orchestra in 1972, Tracer for ensemble and tape in 1984, and Tracking Pierrot for ensemble in 1992.
