Biography
Eastern Rebellion originated in 1974 as a cooperative unit in which pianist Cedar Walton functioned as the leading voice, and the ensemble has continued to perform on an intermittent schedule ever since. Its first roster consisted of Walton, bassist Sam Jones, drummer Billy Higgins, and tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan. George Coleman occupied the tenor chair by the time of the group’s inaugural official recording in 1975. Later lineups occasionally expanded to a quintet with the addition of trombonist Curtis Fuller, while David Williams took over on bass and Bob Berg assumed the tenor position (later succeeded in the 1990s by Ralph Moore); trumpeter Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros also appeared on a 1983 date. Eastern Rebellion has documented its work for Timeless and, in 1990, for Music Masters. The 1975 debut album remains the definitive statement and includes the classic reading of Walton’s “Bolivia.”
