Biography
Edgar Froese remained the sole unbroken link to the groundbreaking synthesizer outfit Tangerine Dream, displaying uncommon drive by issuing solo albums in tandem with the group’s extensive recorded legacy. He gained renown as a virtuoso of the Mellotron, the pioneering keyboard instrument popularized by the Moody Blues that created its textures through key-triggered tape loops of authentic orchestral, choral, and acoustic performances. Although his solo discs retained traces of Tangerine Dream’s characteristic sequencer aesthetic, they conveyed greater immediacy and intimacy while regularly showcasing his taste for rock-oriented guitar lines.
Even as Tangerine Dream delivered signature works Phaedra and Rubycon in 1974–1975, Froese inaugurated his independent career with Aqua and Epsilon in Malaysian Pale, both stylistically aligned with the band’s contemporaneous releases. Across the balance of the 1970s he added four further solo albums during the ensemble’s hiatuses, then issued Pinnacles in 1983. By then Froese had become Tangerine Dream’s unchallenged guiding presence, allowing him to present material that earlier would have appeared under his own name. The 1995 Virgin anthology Beyond the Storm compiled the highlights of his solo trajectory. Edgar Froese died of a pulmonary embolism in Vienna in January 2015 at the age of 70.
