Brighton, England's Electrelane came together in 1998, eventually settling on guitarist Mia Clarke, bassist Rachel Dalley, drummer Emma Gaze, and keyboardist/guitarist Verity Susman. The quartet shared a deep appreciation for Krautrock, vintage gear such as the Farfisa organ, and contemporary production methods, making their first appearance on record in January 2000 with the Film Music single issued by In Denial. After releasing another single via Fierce Panda, the group launched its own Sony-backed imprint, Let's Rock!, and put out two further singles, Gabriel and Blue Straggler, ahead of the April 2001 arrival of its debut album, Rock It to the Moon. Vocal advocates for greater female participation in music, the band took part in the Ladyfest events held in Glasgow several months afterward. For its second album, 2004's The Power Out, Electrelane switched to Too Pure and incorporated singing along with tighter pop frameworks. Dalley departed late in 2004, with Ros Murray stepping in on bass. The following spring brought Axes, a thicker and more exploratory third album. Once the extensive tour supporting Axes concluded, the musicians gathered in Berlin during summer 2006 to compose their fourth record, No Shouts No Calls, tracking it that autumn; the release, which leaned back toward the pop-oriented approach of The Power Out, appeared in spring 2007.
