Biography
During the 1980s Elias Haslanger, a performer on tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones, came of age in the Austin, Texas region while absorbing the music of the Marsalis brothers and other rising jazz figures such as Mark Whitfield and Roy Hargrove. He first took up the saxophone in sixth grade, and by high school he was already working local engagements throughout the Austin and San Antonio vicinity. After enrolling at the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied under renowned saxophone instructor Harvey Pittel, Haslanger continued his training at the Manhattan School of Music and subsequently at Southwest Texas State University; during this period he earned the Downbeat Student Music Award for College Outstanding Tenor Saxophone Performance. His debut recording, the 1994 album Standards, presents a program of straight-ahead bop and swing selections performed by a roster of leading Austin musicians. Haslanger has sustained this approach on later projects, including the 1998 release Kicks Are for Kids, which showcases him alongside noted pianist Ellis Marsalis, drummer J.J. Johnson, and bassist Edwin Livingston. He maintains an active touring schedule and regularly appears on the jazz festival circuit, with annual visits to the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands and the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
