Biography
Born Olga Maria Elisabeth Friederike Schwarzkopf in Jarotschin in 1915, the future Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, DBE, emerged as a globally celebrated opera singer. Although her birthplace remained German at the time, it transferred to Polish jurisdiction in 1919, establishing her technically as a vocalist of German origin. Vienna provided the platform for her earliest substantial recognition, while Great Britain extended unusually warm reception from the outset.
A 1928 appearance in Magdeburg, Germany, marked her initial stage outing, cast as Eurydice in a scholastic mounting of Orfeo ed Euridice. That production directly prompted formal training once she relocated to Berlin in 1934 to advance her operatic ambitions. Political affiliation with the Nazi party during those formative professional years created lasting ostracism, most acutely felt inside the United States.
Membership in the Vienna State Opera began in 1942 and immediately produced Austrian citizenship. Extensive tours across Europe followed, among them her English debut at the Royal Opera House in 1948. Working alongside British classical producer Walter Legge soon developed into marriage, prompting yet another nationality change when she acquired British citizenship.
Further distinctions accumulated over the subsequent twenty years until her last operatic appearance occurred in Brussels in 1971. Attention then turned to lieder recitals, after which a heart attack in 1979 redirected her energies toward pedagogy at venues that included Juilliard. These cumulative achievements ultimately brought a Cambridge doctorate and the title Dame of the British Empire in 1992.
Schwarzkopf died at her Austrian home in 2006 at the age of ninety. The Mozart Medal and Hugo-Wolf Medal, together with her extensive recorded legacy, remain tangible evidence of the scope of her accomplishments.
