Biography
Renata Tebaldi ranked among the foremost lyrico-spinto sopranos during the 1950s and 1960s. Her sizable, resonant instrument, though marred by a markedly unreliable upper extension, struck many listeners as among the most ravishing voices of the twentieth century. She and Maria Callas were routinely cast as polar opposites in an overly reductive contrast, much as pet enthusiasts simplistically label all dogs affectionate yet unintelligent and all cats clever yet disloyal. Callas partisans dismissed Tebaldi as a conventional recitalist preoccupied with vocal display while praising Callas for subordinating her instrument to dramatic truth; Tebaldi partisans, in turn, branded Callas vocally erratic and unappealing, her singing perpetually verging on collapse. In reality Tebaldi possessed genuine theatrical awareness, and across much of her career Callas maintained the steadier, more flexible command of technique.
Tebaldi trained at the Arrigo Boito Conservatory in Parma. Her first appearance onstage came as Elena in Boito’s Mefistofele at Rovigo in 1944. Momentum arrived through a concert rather than an operatic engagement when, in 1946, Toscanini enlisted her for the soprano solo in Verdi’s Te Deum at the reopening of La Scala; whether the conductor meant her elevated physical position, an exhortation to sing celestially, or a literal description of “la voce d’angelo” remains disputed, yet the epithet attached itself to her immediately. Three months afterward she sang Eva in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger for her staged return. London first heard her in 1950 as Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello during a La Scala visit; the same year she reached the United States in San Francisco as Tosca, followed by Paris and Rio de Janeiro appearances in 1951. Her Metropolitan Opera debut occurred in 1955, again as Desdemona, and the house soon functioned as her principal base.
Although she had assayed earlier rarities—Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Rossini’s Le siège de Corinthe, Spontini’s La vestale and Fernando Cortez, and Refice’s Cecilia—she gradually confined herself to standard Verdi, Puccini, and verismo scores. A combination of technical difficulties and personal distress following her mother’s death precipitated a vocal crisis in the early 1960s; she withdrew from the stage in 1963 for rest and retraining. Upon resuming, her singing showed little technical gain, yet critics noted marked improvement in dramatic projection. Childhood polio had permanently restricted her movement, but she now employed gesture and facial expression with greater eloquence. Retirement began in the early 1970s, culminating in a final La Scala performance in 1976.
Among her recordings, the portrayal of Liù in Leinsdorf’s Turandot alongside Nilsson and Bjoerling (RCA Living Stereo 62687) captures her at peak form: the conductor avoids excessive slowness, and the part’s lower tessitura highlights the plush warmth of her middle and low registers while sparing listeners the flatness or stridency that afflicted her top throughout her career.
