Biography
Ella Washington stood out as a Southern soul singer whose intensely raw delivery confined her appeal largely to R&B audiences. Various minor imprints hosted her recordings, yet none succeeded in promoting her tracks successfully, even among soul listeners. The strongest work emerged during the late 1960s and early 1970s, with much of it overseen by the renowned radio personality John Richbourg on Monument's Sound Stage 7 imprint. Although Atlantic leased her track "The Grass Is Greener" from Octavia, the 1969 album bearing her name achieved limited success; however, the single "He Called Me Baby/Stop Giving Your Man Away" drew favorable reactions.
