Biography
Born a decade sooner, Elliot Lawrence could have ranked among the swing period's notable orchestra leaders. Instead, this youthful talent directed a robust dance ensemble at age twenty in 1945, precisely as that musical epoch drew to a close. Between 1946 and 1960 he issued numerous recordings under his own name on Columbia, Decca, King, Fantasy, Vik, and Sesac, occasionally incorporating charts by Gerry Mulligan, though his primary focus remained studio sessions. From 1960 onward he abandoned jazz recording completely, turning instead to composing, arranging, and conducting for television, motion pictures, and stage productions. Limited numbers of his jazz dates remain accessible today, yet the scarce material merits investigation. Elliot Lawrence passed away in Manhattan on July 2, 2021, at the age of ninety-six. ~ Scott Yanow
