The English Symphony Orchestra derives its designation from a focus on Englishness instead of nationwide scope, although its stature reaches far beyond Britain. Based in Worcester, the ensemble describes itself as "The International Orchestra of Elgar Country." Its catalogue has expanded steadily, culminating in the 2024 album The Song of Songs, the Poet in Exile: Works by Walter Arlen.

The group originated in Malvern in 1974 under the name English String Orchestra. Founding conductor William Boughton guided its development for many years, steering the repertoire toward large-scale orchestral pieces from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Works by composers such as Bax, Bridge, and Lennox Berkeley appeared infrequently at that period, so the orchestra attracted English music devotees through its Nimbus recordings. Once the ensemble began presenting music on full symphonic scale, the name changed in 1984 to English Symphony Orchestra. Further recordings have appeared on Signum, Avie, Somm, Toccata, and Naxos.

In the 1990s, principal guest conductor Yehudi Menuhin heightened the orchestra’s visibility through a series of international tours. Vernon Handley became the second principal conductor in 2006 and held the post until his death in 2008. Kenneth Woods assumed the podium in 2013 and subsequently received the title of artistic director.

Contemporary music occupies a substantial share of the orchestra’s activities. The 21st Century Symphony Project began in 2017 with the goal of premiering and recording nine symphonies by nine living composers to reinvigorate the symphonic tradition. The first result was Philip Sawyers’ Symphony No. 3; Sawyers holds the position of John McCabe Composer-in-Association. Woods has also directed performances of music suppressed in Nazi Germany before and during World War II, including compositions by Viktor Ullmann and Hans Gál. Recording output increased in the 2020s, yielding several albums annually, chiefly on Nimbus Alliance. Three releases appeared in 2024, each centered on little-known composers; two presented music by Steve Elcock and Robert Saxton, respectively. Later that year the orchestra moved to Signum Classics for The Song of Songs, the Poet in Exile: Works by Walter Arlen, an album devoted to the virtually unknown Austrian-American composer who worked as a critic and withheld much of his own output.
