Listen on Coda
Caruso received vocal instruction from Vergine along with coaching from conductor Vincenzo Lombardi. Breakthrough recognition arrived through his 1897 portrayal in La Gioconda. A divided audience response to his appearance at the Teatro S Carlo in Naples prompted him to declare he would never perform there again, and he upheld that decision. Appearances followed at Covent Garden in London and on stages across Europe, yet the Metropolitan Opera hosted the largest share of his performances. Patchy and inconsistent preparation left him with technical shortcomings in his early years. Uncertainty in the upper register prompted frequent reliance on falsetto or downward transposition, a limitation that persisted until 1902. His timbre also carried a dark hue that occasionally created ambiguities of color. That same quality ultimately enhanced his appeal by merging full baritone-like weight with smooth, brilliant tenor brilliance. Mastery of interpretation enabled him to navigate the most demanding and varied repertoire. A distinctive command of portamento and legato, together with assured phrasing, further distinguished his artistry. Public affection ran deep, so that his death from abscesses on the lungs following pleurisy prompted widespread and genuine mourning.
