Born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, jazz vocalist Erin Boheme landed a Concord recording contract for her debut album at just eighteen, though her drive to secure a deal had begun years earlier. From childhood onward she performed regularly, supported throughout by her parents’ encouragement of her musical interests. At fifteen she traveled with her mother, Susan, to Los Angeles for meetings with managers and labels, yet those efforts produced no results. She therefore stayed in Wisconsin, performing at local weddings and graduation parties. In 2004 she learned that fellow Oshkosh native and pianist Mike Melvoin had received a Grammy nomination; she reached out to congratulate him. The contact proved pivotal—Melvoin, struck by her talent, took on the role of mentor and brought her in to record with him. The resulting tracks reached Concord, which promptly signed her and issued her first album, What Love Is, in 2006. Six years later she delivered her second release, the Michael Bublé-produced What a Life.
