Emerging in the Philadelphia region during the opening months of 2002, the Espers presented themselves as a neo-psychedelic folk trio. Anchored by singer/songwriter Greg Weeks alongside Meg Baird and Brooke Sietinsons, and augmented by a rotating cast of additional musicians, the group fused chamber rock, baroque pop, and late-'60s British folk into a distinctive sound that cultivated a modest yet intensely loyal audience across both regional and wider circuits. Their self-titled debut, released on the Locust label in 2004, delivered an intoxicating statement of purpose. The EP Weed Tree followed in 2005, comprising covers, traditional material, and original compositions, with the full-length II appearing the next year in 2006.
