Biography
Evan Lurie joined the Lounge Lizards as one of its founding participants during the early 1980s in New York’s influential downtown scene. He has earned recognition for his precise technique as a pianist trained in the classical tradition and for his occasional work on keyboards. Although his brother John Lurie, who led the Lounge Lizards, achieved wider notice across music and independent film, Evan has consistently demonstrated his own abilities as a composer and bandleader. His debut solo release, Selling Water by the Side of the River, appeared in 1990 while he took time away from the Lounge Lizards. The recording highlights his compositional approach through classically-inflected chamber pieces that feature Alfredo Pedernera on bandoneon and Marc Ribot on guitar. His next album, How I Spent My Vacation, arrived in 1998 and gathers pieces originally written for low-budget films, performed by numerous colleagues drawn from the Lounge Lizards’ successive lineups.
