Mark Isham, recognized as a trumpeter and synthesist, has received Grammy honors for his ambient jazz recordings while also establishing a prominent career composing for motion pictures. He first gained attention during the 1970s as a touring and session player alongside Van Morrison, Charles Lloyd, and additional artists before introducing his fusion of jazz, classical, and electronic synthesizer techniques on well-received Windham Hill releases that began with Vapor Drawings in 1983. Film scoring soon became central to his output, encompassing projects such as Never Cry Wolf, A River Runs Through It, and Crash. Even with motion-picture work occupying most of his attention, Isham has pursued further endeavors, including the 1999 album Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project as well as contributions to Brian Wilson’s 2015 release No Pier Pressure and Stanley Clarke’s 2018 album The Message.

Born on September 7, 1951, into a musically inclined household in New York, Isham started classical training on trumpet, piano, and violin during childhood. After the family relocated to San Francisco, he performed with several local orchestras yet remained drawn to jazz, pop, and rock, performing with numerous regional groups while learning synthesizer programming throughout the 1970s. He eventually set classical performance aside to work as a touring and session musician for jazz figures such as Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd as well as pop acts including the Beach Boys and Van Morrison. Isham also joined Art Lande’s Rubisa Patrol quartet, where his playing revealed a clear Miles Davis influence, and formed Group 87, an ensemble whose contemporary instrumental style anticipated the new-age genre by several years and yielded two albums beginning in 1980. Sideman appearances continued through the decade with artists such as David Sylvian, Was (Not Was), the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Suzanne Vega, XTC, Joni Mitchell, and Willie Nelson.

The year 1983 marked a turning point when Isham issued his Windham Hill solo debut, Vapor Drawings, and composed the score for his first film, the Disney drama Never Cry Wolf. That album, the label’s initial emphasis on electronics, showcased his skill at merging synthetic and acoustic sounds and has since been regarded as a progressive electronic landmark. Never Cry Wolf, meanwhile, opened the door to further soundtrack commissions that highlighted his command of diverse styles and instrumental configurations. Seeking broader reach by the late 1980s, he began recording for Virgin while still releasing material on Windham Hill; nominations for Best New Age Performance followed for Castalia in 1988 and Tibet in 1989, with the Grammy ultimately awarded for his 1990 self-titled album.

In 1992 Isham introduced his first commissioned orchestral composition, Five Stories for Trumpet and Orchestra, performing as soloist with the St. Louis Symphony. That same year brought Academy Award and Grammy nominations for the score to A River Runs Through It, heightening industry demand for his services; an additional Academy Award nomination arrived in 1995 for the Jodie Foster film Nell.

Also in 1995 he delivered Blue Sun, his debut Columbia album, which shifted toward full contemporary jazz—a direction further developed on the 1999 Miles tribute Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project. High-profile film assignments from this era included Short Cuts, Quiz Show, Kiss the Girls, and Blade. He received an Emmy for scoring the television series EZ Streets along with nominations for Chicago Hope and Nothing Sacred.

Throughout the 2000s Isham supplied music for such notable films as the Grammy-nominated Men of Honor, The Cooler, Save the Last Dance, Don't Say a Word, and The Majestic, in addition to the 2004 Academy Award-winning Crash and subsequent scores for The Black Dahlia, Reservation Road, and Bobby. In the 2010s his film work encompassed The Mechanic, Dolphin Tale, The Conjuring, 42, and Togo, while television projects included Once Upon a Time, the anthology series American Crime, Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, and the Black Mirror episode “Arkangel.” He opened the 2020s with the score for Bill & Ted Face the Music, the third installment in that series.

Beyond screen scoring, Isham has contributed trumpet to an array of recordings, among them Morrissey’s 2009 album Years of Refusal, Brian Wilson’s 2015 effort No Pier Pressure, and Stanley Clarke’s 2018 album The Message.
