Biography
Among musicians who achieved prominence amid the surge of new age recordings during the 1980s and 1990s, Yanni attained broader and more sustained recognition than nearly any other figure in that movement. Through instrumental compositions marked by heightened drama, dynamic shifts, and romantic emphasis, he reached far wider audiences than most contemporaries via adult alternative radio exposure and a commanding stage presence that drew viewers from repeated public television specials and extensive global concert circuits.
Born Yiannis Chryssomalis on November 14, 1954, in Kalamata, Greece, Yanni revealed early musical aptitude by playing piano at age six. Rather than directing him toward formal conservatory training, his parents urged him to develop his skills independently and at his own tempo. He moved to Minnesota in 1972 for college studies, majoring in psychology while maintaining involvement in music through a local rock band and private keyboard practice. After earning his degree in 1977, Yanni joined the Minneapolis rock ensemble Chameleon, which performed throughout the region and issued several independent albums. By 1980 he had begun his solo path, producing and releasing the album Optimystique. Atlantic Records signed him in 1984 and reissued the earlier privately pressed Optimystique, though the association proved brief; the recording nevertheless caught the interest of Private Music, which issued Keys to Imagination in 1986 and later re-released Optimystique. Yanni settled in Los Angeles, where he scored films alongside his solo work, and following the 1987 release of Out of Silence he launched his first major tour with John Tesh on keyboards and former Chameleon drummer Charlie Adams. After Reflections of Passion appeared in 1990, he presented a notable concert alongside the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, foreshadowing the expansive productions that would follow.
Dare to Dream brought Yanni his initial Grammy nomination in 1992, while his pieces gained further visibility through television advertisements and sports broadcasts. Concert presentations grew increasingly ambitious as his audience expanded, culminating in a 1993 performance at Athens’s Herod Atticus Theater—more than two thousand years old—in support of In My Time. The resulting live album and video Yanni Live at the Acropolis sold over seven million copies worldwide and became a staple of U.S. public television programming. Building on that momentum, Yanni arranged high-profile concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall and other major international venues, plus landmark appearances at India’s Taj Mahal and China’s Forbidden City in 1997; selections from those events formed the album Tribute. In each instance he became the first Western artist granted permission to perform at those historic sites. Following a 1998 world tour, Yanni paused for two years and relocated to the East Coast. His 2000 Virgin Records debut If I Could Tell You presented a more personal and intimate approach, while 2003’s Ethnicity incorporated world music elements. In 2009 he founded Yanni-Wake Entertainment in partnership with Disney and issued Yanni Voices, marking his first solo-career collaboration with vocalists and introducing several emerging talents. He took those singers on tour, then explored Latin repertoire with 2010’s Mexicanisimo. The 2011 studio album Truth of Touch returned him to the top of the Billboard new age chart and ranked as that year’s best-selling new age release. After extensive touring, Yanni partnered with leading operatic voices for the 2014 album Inspirato, where Plácido Domingo, Renée Fleming, Russell Watson, Vittorio Grigolo, Rolando Villazón, and Katherine Jenkins supplied vocals to re-recordings of earlier inspirational pieces. He continued with 2016’s Sensuous Chill, comprising ten new tracks and seven previously released selections chosen and ordered for atmospheric effect.
