Nicholas Gunn, who produces, composes, plays multiple instruments, and runs the Blue Dot Music imprint, crafts atmospheric instrumental pieces that fuse grounded tones with ambient electronic layers. His second album, 1994’s The Sacred Fire, marked his initial entry into the Top Ten of Billboard’s New Age Albums chart. Drawing on global sounds that stretch from the American Southwest through Latin music and beyond, he established himself as a fixture on new age rankings with further Top Ten entries that included 1995’s The Music of the Grand Canyon, which remained on the chart for 55 weeks, 2007’s Encanto alongside guitarist Johannes Linstead, and 2012’s Thirty-One Nights. Also in 2012 he helmed a version of Sonique’s trance hit “It Feels So Good” for (We Are) Nexus, which climbed to a Top 20 dance placement the following year. Tracks he contributed to the Under the Influence of Music series during the mid-2010s were later gathered on the 2016 release Under the Influence of Music, the Complete Series, and after issuing dance remixes under the Limelght name he issued his 21st studio album, Sound Condition, in 2021. Later projects featured trance partnerships such as the track “Higher” with York and Sam Martin plus “For All Time,” which he wrote for Armin van Buuren and Aly & Fila.

Born in Rochester, England, Gunn started music lessons at the Royal Academy of Music when he was seven and kept studying until his family moved to Los Angeles roughly four years afterward. There he studied classical flute and performed in school wind groups. After high school he turned briefly to acting and secured several television guest roles, yet soon returned to music, mastering recording methods while developing a distinctive sound and compositional approach.

He issued his debut album, Afternoon in Sedona, independently in 1993. Its Southwestern character resurfaced on 1994’s The Sacred Fire, which reached number ten on the New Age Albums chart after appearing on the Real Music label. The Music of the Grand Canyon repeated that chart success the next year, while 1996’s Crossroads, shaped by Latin influences, reached number 11. Passion in My Heart arrived in 1998, followed by Return to Grand Canyon in 1999. In 2001 he released The Great Southwest on his own Anagram Records imprint, then changed direction the next year with Through the Great Smoky Mountains: A Musical Journey after closing Anagram; that project came out on his newly founded Gemini Sun Records. Also on Gemini Sun in 2002 he issued his first Christmas collection, A Christmas Classic, with Journey to Yellowstone appearing the following year. Both Breathe in 2004 and Beyond Grand Canyon in 2006 likewise appeared on Gemini Sun.

His next album, Encanto, was recorded with guitarist Johannes Linstead and released by Spring Hill Music in 2007, returning him to the new age Top Ten. He stayed with Spring Hill for 2012’s Thirty-One Nights, another Top Ten entry. The Gunn-produced single “It Feels So Good” by electro-pop group (We Are) Nexus came out in 2013 and peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. That same year Spring Hill issued the retrospective Twenty Years of Discovery. Gunn then focused on individual tracks through the Under the Influence of Music series, which were compiled on Under the Influence of Music, the Complete Series in 2016. The location-themed pieces “Ibiza Sunset” and “Saint Lucia” surfaced in 2017 and later appeared on the 2019 album Riding the Thermals from Blue Dot Studios, which included vocals by Alina Renae on several tracks. During this period he also began issuing remixes for Armada Music and Raz Nitzan Music under the Limelght alias.

Pacific Blue, a water-themed Nicholas Gunn album, arrived on Blue Dot in 2020, followed by Sound Condition in 2021. As Blue Dot grew, Gunn kept a steady output that featured popular collaborative singles such as 2021’s “Higher” with York featuring Sam Martin, “California” featuring Chris Howard, and “Sensing You” with AVIRA, each accumulating multi-million streaming totals. “For All Time,” a co-write with performers Armin van Buuren and Aly & Fila, earned A State of Trance Tune of the Year honors on radio. A busy 2022 brought further collaborations including “Wild Child” featuring RAEYA, “Love You More” with Dave Neven, and “Wings” with Protoculture featuring Alina Renae.
