Straddling pop and new age realms, Jim Brickman’s gentle piano pieces conjure feelings of romance, hope, and subtle encouragement. He first gained recognition during the mid-1990s while recording for Windham Hill, becoming one of the rare solo instrumentalists to reach the Top 40 on the pop albums chart, then expanded into pop and country pairings—most notably the Top Ten country success “Valentine” alongside Martina McBride—along with seasonal releases and a pair of collections devoted to classic Disney material. Across his lengthy career he has collected two Grammy nominations plus a Dove Award, with more than twenty albums hitting number one on the Billboard new age chart.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Brickman entered the Cleveland Institute of Music as a late teenager. Although the curriculum centered on classical repertoire, mainstream influences proved irresistible, prompting him at age 19 to begin creating advertising jingles. Those efforts led to commissions from clients including the Gap, Isuzu, Sprint, and Kellogg’s, as well as work with Jim Henson and Henson Associates. Through that partnership he wrote material for the Muppets and Sesame Street productions and contributed to several Henson-related Disney ventures.

His first Windham Hill album, No Words, appeared in 1994. By Heart followed the next year on the same imprint, while 1997 brought both Picture This and the holiday set The Gift. Visions of Love arrived in 1998, and Destiny came out in early 1999. The polished live recording My Romance: An Evening with Jim Brickman surfaced in 2000. Two years afterward he issued the children’s project Love Songs and Lullabies. Subsequent releases such as Grace, Peace, and The Disney Songbook continued the graceful, understated style of his prior work; Peace earned a 2003 Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.

Brickman departed Windham Hill in 2006 to issue Escape on Savoy Jazz. Hope appeared on Compass in 2007, succeeded by the seasonal Homecoming. He remained with Savoy for 2008’s Unspoken and then delivered four albums plus a DVD the following year: Beautiful World served as the soundtrack to a filmed performance featuring guest artists, From the Heart presented earlier favorites with a 75-piece orchestra, and the holiday titles The Hymns & Carols of Christmas and Joy rounded out the set. In 2010 he released Love, Home, and Never Alone, which included appearances by Lady Antebellum, Marc Antoine, Jake Simpson, Carnie Wilson, and Gerald Levert. Italian melodies inspired 2011’s Romanza, released alongside the seasonal All Is Calm: Peaceful Christmas Hymns and the Carpenters tribute Yesterday Once More.

Piano Lullabies: Baby’s Bedtime Favorites, the hymn collection Blessings, and the covers album Romance all surfaced in 2012. The next year yielded Love 2 and The Magic of Christmas. In 2014 Brickman mixed new compositions with standards such as “Moon River” on Timeless, while also issuing Pure Worship: A Soothing Collection of Contemporary Worship Melodies on Piano, Piano Inspirations, and the benefit album On a Winter’s Night: The Songs and Spirit of Christmas. Pure Romance arrived just before Valentine’s Day 2015 and was quickly followed by Pure Piano and Comfort & Joy: The Sweet Sounds of Christmas. Three further albums appeared in 2016: Pure Cinema, devoted to film themes, arrived in March; Freedom Rings, featuring solo-piano renditions of American patriotic songs, followed in June; and Soothe, Vol. 2: Sleep (Music for Tranquil Slumber) came out in September. Another trio emerged in 2017—Wedding Songs, Soothe, Vol. 3: Music for Peaceful Relaxation, and A Joyful Christmas.

Brickman revisited holiday material with 2019’s Celebration of Christmas. Piano Tributes: Songs of Carole King appeared in 2020, Brickman on Broadway in 2021, and Disney on Piano, Vol. 2, the follow-up to his earlier Disney collection, in 2022.
