Biography
The recordings of keyboardist and composer Danny Wright resist easy categorization. He moves fluidly among adult contemporary works, Broadway show tunes paired with movie themes, and classical repertoire. His own pieces generally follow an adult contemporary path and draw inspiration from classical figures such as Beethoven, Pachelbel, and Debussy, alongside Broadway masters including Gershwin, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jerome Kern, and Stephen Sondheim.
Born and raised in Fort Worth, TX, Wright started piano lessons at age four. For a decade he trained in classical technique with Dr. Harris Cavender, during which time he revealed an aptitude for reproducing any given style through improvisation and has since applied that skill to render each performance distinctly his own. A full scholarship later took him to Christian University for studies in music education, yet he left school at age 22 to launch his professional life. In 1985 he began writing original material and, together with Dori and Bob Nichols, established the label Nichols-Wright Records—subsequently renamed Moulin D'Or Recordings—to issue his albums.
Wright’s first release, Black and White (1986), was initially offered only to a circle of friends, relatives, and restaurant patrons. Two years passed before the Nichols succeeded in securing airplay on local Dallas/Fort Worth stations. His second album, Time Windows (1987), highlighted his original compositions; both early projects were sold exclusively through mail order. By 1987 his catalog had reached distributors across North America. The third album, Phantasys (1988), ranks among his most widely embraced efforts and again centers on his own writing. In 1992, Autumn Dreams climbed to the Top Ten on Billboard’s Top Adult Alternative sales chart, remained there for more than six months, and earned recognition as one of the year’s leading new age albums.
From the mid-’90s onward Wright has performed in venues throughout the U.S., frequently supporting benefits for the Children’s Foundation and the Humane Society. He maintained an annual recording schedule with Nichols-Wright until relocating to Real Music in 2001, where he sustained the same pace and issued the two-CD collection Danny Wright Healer of Hearts in 2003.
