Biography
Recognized for her range across multiple instruments and honored with awards, American pianist, violinist, and composer Jennifer Thomas first appeared as a soloist alongside symphonies and orchestras before launching an independent recording career in 2007. As an endorsed Yamaha artist, her original compositions and classical covers have registered on the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts, with her music placed in films and television programs.
Born in Seattle, Washington, Thomas started formal musical instruction at home upon reaching age five, since her mother also works as a pianist and composer. She pursued piano studies at Brigham Young University-Idaho, joining the school's piano ensemble while performing on violin in its symphony. After graduation the sought-after multi-instrumentalist appeared with Salt Lake City's Murray Symphony, the Temple Square Concert Series, and the Oregon Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, in addition to serving in the educational department of the Seattle Symphony. At that stage Thomas began writing original pieces, drawing on extensive classical training to shape instrumental works rooted in tradition yet experimental and cinematic in scope.
Her 2007 debut album, Key of Sea, presented adaptations of five classical pieces together with eight new compositions. Two years later came The Lullaby Album, a project with her mother, Carolyn Southworth, that incorporated lullabies Southworth had sung to Thomas during childhood. The expansive and critically acclaimed Illumination followed in 2012, merging Thomas's assertive classical approach with world-music elements. The Yuletide-themed Winter Symphony appeared in 2015 and included contributions from musicians of the Ensign Chorus, the Utah Symphony, the Salt Lake City Pops Orchestra, and the Cochin Chamber Orchestra. A remastered edition of the 2007 debut, complete with bonus tracks and fresh artwork, was released in 2017, while The Fire Within arrived in 2018 and entered the Billboard classical chart at number three.
