David Arkenstone

Grammy-nominated composer David Arkenstone fuses global sounds, cinematic textures, and rock energy into his distinctive take on new age music, a body of work that has surfaced in film scores, television placements, and video game soundtracks in addition to the many albums released under his own name. This prolific artist, based in California, first gained recognition during the 1990s through a string of fantasy-themed recordings issued by the Narada label, later becoming a central figure on the Green Hill Music roster in the years that followed. Working chiefly as a keyboardist and guitarist, Arkenstone has steadily expanded the range of his instrumental music, moving from ambient chillout and relaxation pieces into heavy metal game scores as well as Celtic and world traditions that draw from Egyptian and Native American sources. With the 2016 release of The Fairy Garden he began circling back to the fantasy-driven style of his earliest projects, earning a fourth Grammy nomination for the sequel album Fairy Dreams. His steady pace of releases continued into the following decade, encompassing 2022’s Native Heart and 2023’s Winterlüde.

A dedicated listener from the age of ten onward, Arkenstone relocated from Chicago to California and absorbed a wide spectrum of musical styles while performing on keyboards and guitar in several youth ensembles. Exposure to Kitaro’s expansive arrangements prompted his deeper exploration of new age music, further encouraged by the growing integration of computer technology with traditional instruments. He produced most of his recordings partly or wholly on a Macintosh, augmented by synthesizers and guitars, an electro-acoustic approach heard on 1998’s The Celtic Book of Days and on the albums issued by his band Troika between the mid-1990s and the early 2000s.

Arkenstone’s solo trajectory had already become firmly established by then, marked by multiple Billboard-charting albums and three Grammy nominations for In the Wake of the Wind in 1992, Citizen of the World in 2000, and Atlantis in 2004. Throughout the 2000s he broadened his palette, weaving in Egyptian and tropical influences along with field recordings for the Natural Wonders Collection series, while contributing to notable video game scores such as World of Warcraft: Taverns of Azeroth in 2007 and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm in 2010.

As the 2010s progressed, ambient and chillout currents increasingly shaped his new age output. The 2016 album Fairy Garden signaled a return to the vivid, mystical character of his initial work while also venturing into dark ambient territory. In 2017 he evoked Italy’s romantic heritage and film legacy on Italian Nights. Two years later the expansive Fairy Dreams earned his fourth Grammy nomination. In tandem with additional ambient, relaxation, and spa-oriented projects, he continued the fantasy series with Fairy Tales in 2020.

Entering the 2020s, Arkenstone maintained a consistent release schedule that included further chillout and ambient collections, a 2021 collaboration with Wouter Kellerman titled Pangea, a 2022 joint effort with Diane Arkenstone called Avalon: Between Earth & Sky, and additional entries in the World of Warcraft soundtrack series. Winterlüde, issued in 2023, captured the muted, introspective atmosphere of the winter season.
