Norwegian producer and composer Øystein Ramfjord shaped Amethystium as an ambient new age and electronica endeavor infused with world music elements. The project first surfaced in 1999 through the self-issued album Odonata. Autumn Interlude, an EP, appeared the following year. A contract with Neurodisc Records soon led to three albums issued across four years, each entering the Top 10 on the Billboard New Age Albums chart: the 2001 reissue of Odonata, whose “Odyssey” later surfaced in the 2004 IMAX film Sacred Planet; 2003’s Aphelion; and 2004’s Evermind. The last of these featured vocals by Lee Nisbet of Animus Mundi on three tracks. Emblem (Selected Pieces), a compilation, surfaced in 2006, with Isabliss arriving in 2008. After parting from Neurodisc, Ramfjord’s own AM.mu Records issued the 2012 EP Aurorae. Transience, a wistful 2014 release, incorporated the Harding fiddle, a traditional Norwegian instrument.
