Biography
Libera stands as a globally acclaimed vocal ensemble for boys, assembled by music director Robert Prizeman and drawing its participants from schools scattered across South London. With members ranging in age from seven to sixteen, the lineup has shifted steadily since the group first formed in 1995. Beyond its own tours and string of well-received recordings, Libera has contributed to film and video game scores, appeared on television programs, and delivered live performances alongside acts that include Björk, Elton John, and Luciano Pavarotti. The ensemble resurfaced in 2021 with the studio album If.
Its roots trace to the choral practices of St. Philip's parish in Norbury. Through the end of the 1990s the collective also went by the names St. Philip's Boys Choir and Angel Voices. Robert Prizeman guided the release of the debut album, titled simply Libera, on Erato in October 1999; the record climbed to number five on the Billboard classical chart and defined the blend of original crossover pieces with classical choral works that would mark the group's output thereafter. During the 2000s Libera produced further successful releases such as Luminosa (2001), Free (2004), and New Dawn (2008), while placing tracks on soundtracks for The Merchant of Venice and Hannibal.
Following 2011's The Christmas Album, the group captured the concert set Angels Sing: Christmas in Ireland (2013) and the subsequent Angels Sing: Libera in America (2015). It then resumed original material with the 2017 studio album Hope before issuing the 2021 successor If.
