Biography
Comprising a fluid roster of six voices—two countertenors, one tenor, one bass, and two baritones—The King's Singers have long stood as a British vocal group that circles the globe with programs spanning centuries of repertory. From their origins in the 1960s through the present day, the ensemble has sustained an active performing career that regularly fills concert halls.
The six founding members, all choral scholars in the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, came together in 1965. They first captured some secular pieces they had rehearsed by making a private disc under the name Schola Cantorum Pro Musica Profana in Cantabridgiense and ordered one hundred copies to share with relatives and acquaintances. Encouraged by the results, the singers—Martin Lane, Alastair Hume, Neil Jenkins, Richard Salter, Simon Carrington, and Brian Kay—arranged a tour billed as Six Choral Scholars from King's College. Its success prompted an Argo Records executive to propose the permanent title The King's Singers.
Their debut public concert occurred on May 1, 1968. Attention in Britain grew quickly, leading to initial commercial releases: By Appointment in 1971 and The King's Music the following year. During the 1980s the personnel began to shift for the first time, yet demand remained strong, supported by an intensive schedule of appearances that included a spot on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Releases such as All at Once Well Met: English Madrigals in 1985 and The Beatles Connection in 1986 sold briskly.
The group has preserved its exacting ensemble sound across repeated changes of membership. Among all past singers, Alastair Hume served the longest, staying until the close of the 1992 season. Several alumni, including Nigel Short, Gabriel Crouch, and composer Bob Chilcott, later pursued distinguished independent careers. As of the mid-2020s the roster consists of countertenors Patrick Dunachie and Edward Button, tenor Julian Gregory, baritones Christopher Bruerton and Nick Ashby, and bass Jonathan Howard.
Dozens of recordings on multiple labels document repertory ranging from madrigals and motets to Japanese folk songs and a cappella pop arrangements. The singers have also generated numerous new works by commissioning composers such as Luciano Berio, György Ligeti, Toru Takemitsu, James MacMillan, and Gabriela Lena Frank. In addition, they conduct master classes and summer courses for emerging performers. A Grammy Award arrived in 2009 for the Signum album Simple Gifts, and the ensemble contributed to Eric Whitacre's Grammy-winning Light & Gold in 2012. Subsequent projects include Great American Songbook in 2013 and Postcards in 2014. The three-disc collection Gold appeared in 2017, presenting both traditional pieces and contemporary hits by Wiz Khalifa ("See You Again"), The Beatles ("And I Love Her"), KT Tunstall ("Black Horse and the Cherry Tree"), John Legend ("All of Me"), and others. Finding Harmony, a nineteen-track survey crossing eras and genres with the aim of fostering global unity through song, was issued in 2020. Four further albums followed in 2023, among them Wonderland, which features performances of György Ligeti's Nonsense Madrigals.
