Schiller, recognized as one of Germany’s leading electronic outfits during the opening decades of the twenty-first century, has frequently secured the summit of the nation’s album rankings with its trance and ambient creations. The project originated in 1998 as a partnership between Christopher von Deylen and Mirko von Schlieffen, who chose the name in tribute to the German poet Friedrich Schiller. Its inaugural single, “Das Glockenspiel,” surfaced that same year and climbed into the top 40 on both the German and Swiss singles charts while reaching number 17 in England, the act’s sole British hit. The debut album Zeitgeist arrived in 1999, presenting an expansive sequence of entrancing instrumental passages punctuated by spoken-word segments and yielding two further chart entries, “Liebesschmerz” and “Ruhe.”

Although Zeitgeist concentrated exclusively on club-oriented trance, the follow-up Weltreise (issued abroad as Voyage) broadened the palette in 2001 to embrace ambient textures, downtempo grooves, and synth-pop elements. Vocal contributions came from Kim Sanders, previously of Culture Beat and Captain Hollywood Project, and Peter Heppner of Wolfsheim, while voice actors Otto Sander, Benjamin Völz, and Franziska Pigulla supplied spoken passages alongside guitar and orchestral arrangements. The album held Germany’s top chart position for four weeks and earned platinum status; the Heppner-fronted track “Dream of You” peaked at number 13 domestically. After recording concluded, von Schlieffen departed, leaving von Deylen to steer Schiller as a solo venture.

The first release under this configuration, Leben (released internationally as Life), emerged in 2003 on Island and welcomed returning collaborators Heppner and Sanders together with Sarah Brightman, Maya Saban, and Mila Mar. The Heppner duet “Leben… I Feel You” topped charts in Poland and Romania and registered as a U.S. club success. Schiller’s initial concert document, Live ErLeben, followed in 2004. The 2005 studio set Tag und Nacht featured progressive-rock veteran Mike Oldfield and Irish folk artist Moya Brennan, while Prologue offered American listeners one of the project’s tour-exclusive ambient collections. A live CD/DVD package titled Tagtraum appeared in 2006.

The ambitious double album Sehnsucht surfaced in 2008, uniting von Deylen with Xavier Naidoo, Ana Torroja, Helen Boulding, Klaus Schulze, and numerous others; it became Schiller’s second German number-one album. Two tracks later surfaced on the single-disc edition—“Time for Dreams” with pianist Lang Lang and “You” with Colbie Caillat—both reaching the domestic top 20. In 2010 the studio albums Atemlos and Lichtblick, the live set Atemlos Live, and the retrospective Timeline all appeared, incorporating guest appearances by Anggun, Midge Ure, Nadia Ali, and Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit. Sonne, issued in 2012, marked Schiller’s third consecutive chart-topping album; its title track with Unheilig climbed to number 12, the project’s highest German single placement, while additional contributors included Adam Young of Owl City, Andrea Corr of the Corrs, and Paper Aeroplanes.

Following the 2013 live release Sonne Live, the Deutsche Grammophon sublabel Panorama presented Opus, which explored classical terrain through interpretations of Tchaikovsky, Satie, Debussy, and others, performed with soprano Anna Netrebko, pianist Hélène Grimaud, and oboist Albrecht Mayer. Symphonia, a 2014 orchestral live recording of earlier material, preceded the cinematic 2016 album Future, shaped by von Deylen’s time in the Mojave Desert and featuring vocalists Maggie Szabo, Emma Hewitt, and Cristina Scabbia, with Sharon Stone supplying lyrics to one piece. That year also brought the career-spanning Zeitreise and its live counterpart. In 2017 Schiller became the first electronic artist to perform in Tehran, Iran. The 2019 album Morgenstund incorporated collaborations with Iranian musicians Pouya Saraei and Pirooz Arjmand, new-wave icon Nena, producer Giorgio Moroder, and Tangerine Dream’s Thorsten Quaeschning.
