Biography
Dash Berlin emerged as a prominent progressive trance ensemble hailing from the Netherlands. Their debut single "Till the Sky Falls Down" from 2007 quickly achieved worldwide dance prominence. The group aligned with Armin van Buuren's Armada imprint, and within several years DJ Mag placed them among the planet's ten leading DJs. Dash Berlin accumulated further honors while issuing We Are (Part 1) in 2014 and We Are (Part 2) in 2017, alongside reworks for Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Röyksopp, and Mylo. Starting in 2018, a dispute over the Dash Berlin trademark triggered prolonged litigation among the three originators. By early 2021 the rights passed to Eelke Kalberg and Sebastiaan Molijn, leaving Jeffrey Sutorius to proceed independently.
The act originated in The Hague, Netherlands, during 2007, built around scene veterans Kalberg, Molijn, and Sutorius. Their inaugural release, "Till the Sky Falls Down," doubled as their breakthrough entry and landed on van Buuren's influential playlist. After signing to Armada, they delivered the 2009 album The New Daylight. The track "Waiting" featuring Emma Hewitt secured an International Dance Music Award for Best High Energy Track, followed the next year by an IDMA nod for Best European DJ.
Dash Berlin maintained strong DJ Mag Top 100 placements, reaching number seven in 2012 immediately after their mentor van Buuren. Their sophomore effort, 2012's #Musicislife, contained the well-received "When You Were Around" featuring Kate Nash. In 2014 the trio launched the first half of the We Are series, spotlighting "Here Tonight" and "Underneath the Sky." The 2017 sequel yielded "Listen to Your Heart," "Heaven," and "Without the Sun."
Internal fractures surfaced by June 2018 when Sutorius declared his exit. After contentious proceedings, Kalberg and Molijn ultimately withdrew from the project, allowing Sutorius to issue 2019 and 2020 recordings under the Dash Berlin banner. The conflict resolved in March 2021, assigning the name to Kalberg and Molijn while Sutorius reverted to his legal identity. The resulting duo closed out the year with "Oceans" and "Home at Last."
