Phil Thornton maintains strong ties to the British New Age music scene while also distinguishing himself as a skilled guitarist through extensive touring and recording work alongside Sinead O'Connor. As a steady participant in the neo-psychedelic English group Mandragon, he has further collaborated with Gordon Giltrap, Talking Heads, Stallion, Die Laughing, Naked Lunch, 4 B 2's, and Expandis. Thornton bolsters these performing skills through his work as a seasoned studio producer.

His initial foray into non-rhythm New Age composition came via the film score for Cloud Sculpting, later issued by New World Music—the label that has issued the bulk of his output. During that assignment he connected with didgeridoo player Steven Cragg, leading to the joint recordings Initiation and Tibetan Horn. From his Sussex, England facility Expandibubble, Thornton keeps pushing boundaries in sequenced electronic music with Alien Encounter while also examining perspectives drawn from tribal and ethnic traditions on Shaman.
