Deuter has long incorporated acoustic and electronic instruments alongside ethnic traditions and natural soundscapes into his instrumental work, an approach he initiated back in the early 1970s. Gentle melodies and upbeat rhythms give his pieces broad appeal while he weaves together Eastern and Western influences in distinctive fashion. Born in the German village of Falkenhagen, he mastered the flute and instructed himself on guitar, yet received little encouragement to make music his livelihood. A near-fatal car accident in 1970 ultimately prompted him to follow his creative path. His debut release, D, appeared on Kuckuck in 1971. Worldwide travels in search of spiritual depth took him especially to India, where residence at an ashram allowed him to study Indian music and produce several albums. He relocated to the United States in the mid-1980s and eventually established residence in Santa Fe, NM. Since then he has sustained a close association with New Earth Records, issuing numerous recordings created for meditation, relaxation, and healing.
